Summer Must Haves — May 26, 2021

Summer Must Haves

Since I’m on vacation, I finally have time to catch up on reading all my favorite magazines.  Here is a synopsis of their best advice on beauty products.

  1. Best exfoliant is a summer favorite—SkinMedica AHA/BHA.  It’s mild enough to use at the beach.
  2. The consensus favorite for antioxidants to neutralize sun damage is still Skinceutical CE Ferulic.
  3. DEJ eye cream can give you visible changes in as little as four weeks with its amazing peptides to combat dark circles and fine lines.
  4. Best serum and worth every dime is TNS Advanced by SkinMedica, although I still prefer their sister product TNS Essential Serum.
  5. If your oily skin doesn’t like sunscreen, try Ella UV Clear.

All of these are available at ArkLaTex Dermatology.  For those of you traveling with limited space for packing like me, a great over the counter cleanser is Cetaphil, and it can be bought in small travel size.

Have fun on vacation with all your favorite products!

Lighten Up! — May 23, 2021

Lighten Up!

Three great ways to lighten those dark spots with ZO skin care

  1. ZO pigment control—contains hydroquinone and also glycolic acid.  Bleaches and exfoliates at the same time.  May make you a little sun sensitive, so wear your sunscreen. And be prepared to peel a little initially.
  2. ZO pigment control plus brightening cream—contains antioxidants as well as hydroquinone to destroy free radicals while it lightens skin. It’s all you need under your sunscreen.
  3. ZO pigment control plus blending cream—a hydroquinone that mixes easily with Retin-A at night. Talk to your dermatologist to customize your skin care.

Why Accutane? — May 5, 2021

Why Accutane?

Acne is one of the most common diagnoses in my office. While not considered a serious medical problem, it can be a source of low self esteem and even permanent scarring.

So who should consider Accutane and why? If you have been on oral antibiotics greater than 6 months as well as multiple topical creams, this may be a better option. Accutane is normally a 5 or 6 month course. Almost everyone clears during this time, and the vast majority stay clear. The most common side effect—dryness—is less of a problem in summer.

Talk to your dermatologist about whether Accutane is right for you.

Are You Layering Your Skincare Correctly? — March 28, 2021

Are You Layering Your Skincare Correctly?

It’s not only important to use the right products, you need to use them in the right order to maximize the benefit.  Think prepare, treat, and seal your products in.

Here’s a simple 4-step guide:

1) Cleanser

2) Toner to remove excess oil that would block penetration of products

3) Serum—your antioxidants and/or growth factors

4) Moisturizer to seal in your products—this can be in your makeup or sunscreen

VI Peel— The Antidote to Winter — March 14, 2021

VI Peel— The Antidote to Winter

Behind our masks this winter is skin needing some rejuvenation. Dry skin in winter needs exfoliation to restore brightness. Discoloration from acne needs to be erased. And there is always dreaded brown discoloration.

The VI peel is a medium depth peel, so expect epidermal peeling beginning on day 2. It may be done singly or in a series. For added effect, one can try the Precision Plus version of this with hydroquinone. This can be booked at either office.

Pucker Up! — February 14, 2021

Pucker Up!

Three things to do in February for lip enhancement

1) Lip filler.  There are a number of products ranging from Juvederm Ultra to Restylane Kysse to enhance lips, decrease lip lines and perk up the corners around the mouth.

2) Topical creams and gels.  These products give a temporary smoothing and plumping and take effect in minutes .

3) The much touted Lip Flip to perk up your lips and reduce smoker’s lines.  This is accomplished with small amounts of Botox.

If you want great lips, try all three!
